Teltron Maltese Cross Tube S
A highly evacuated demonstration tube with an electron gun — a tungsten hairpin filament and a cylindrical anode housed in a clear glass bulb — whose diverging beam is made visible on a fluorescent screen. An aluminium Maltese cross suspended in the bulb casts a shadow, demonstrating that cathode rays travel in straight lines when no electric or magnetic field is present. Applying a magnetic field deflects and focuses the beam, providing an introduction to electron optics and to electrostatic charging effects. A 3-mm hole in the lower limb of the cross makes the orientation of the shadow easy to follow.
